- Obituary:.
16th September 1919.
Brigadier General Fred A. Tencate.
In Phoenixville, Fred A. Tencate died at his home on Sunday. Death was due to a complication of diseases. He was in his 78th year.
General Tencate was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, of the Masonic Fraternity, and high up in that Order, as tonight, if he had lived, he would have taken the thirty-third degree.
On January 17, 1866, he was united in marriage to Jennie E. Bradley, a daughter of Rev. Joel E. Bradley, of Phoenixville. Mrs. Tencate died twenty years ago.
The deceased is survived by four daughters: Frances, who Sunday passed her 21st anniversary as a missionary to India; Mrs. George Morrison, of Philadelphia; Mrs. William T. Hodge, of Nutt's.
Avenue, and Miss Mary E. Tencate, at home, and three brothers: Albert, of Phoenixville; William, of Ridley Park; Alfred, in the West, and one sister, Mrs. Thomas J. Quay, of Gay street. Three granddaughters also survive.
Fred A. Tencate was born on January 3, 1842, on the Isle of Guernsey, Great Britain. He was a son of the late John E. and Frances S. Tencate. In 1852 the family emigrated to America and located in Phoenixville. At an early age he began working with his father at the shoemaking trade, which he followed for three years. He then secured employment in the rolling mills, which is now the Phoenix Iron Works. In 1861, when only 19 years old, he enlisted in Co. C, 1st Pennsylvania Reserve Corps. As a private and at Harrison Landing, Va, August 4 1862, received the first of many promotions.
In October 1864, he procured a furlough and visited Philadelphia, desiring to become a citizen of the United States, and cast his first vote for Abraham Lincoln, in the following November.
At the mustering out of the 5th Colored Cavalry he was assigned to duty superintendent of the Bureau of Refugees at Hamburg, Arkansas. He resigned on July 9, 1866, to accept the position of assistant cashier of the Phoenix Iron Company. He occupied that place until March, 1879, when he was made cashier. This position he resigned some years ago. (Source: Carol Tencate Battin)
