Miss Frances Tencate, a native of Phoenixville, former teacher in the public schools here, later a missionary to Nellore, South India for a period of 40 years, died Tuesday at the Nugent Home for Missionaries and Ministers, Germantown. She would have celebrated her 96th birthday on May 31 of this year..
She was born in Phoenixville in 1870, was graduated from the Phoenixville High School in the class of 1886 and from the West Chester State Normal School in 1889. She had resided in Phoenixville following her return from the mission field until she entered the Nugent home..
In India she opened a school for the training of elementary school teachers with a practice school and remained there for any years in charge of the teacher training department. Miss Nancy Maxton, also of Phoenixville, is presently serving in the same area of India. She is a nurse and is associated with a hospital in the region..
Miss Tencate's work in India has been recognized by the government of India..
The funeral will be held from the Kirk and Nice Funeral Home, 6301 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia. at 11 a.m. Friday, April 1. Burial will be in Morris Cemetery, Phoenixville, about 12:30 p.m. A graveside service will be held.
