Sypks Sypkens" is buried in the Stockton Rural Cemetery without a grave marker. According to the records maintained by the cemetery, Sypks Sypkens is buried in Block 36, Row V, Lot 486. His burial spot is three lots east of the upright grave marker for Frank Monreo.
Per the California Death Index, 1905-1939, "Sypka Syphens" died on 5 Apr 1907 in San Joaquin County, CA, at the age of 66 years, giving him a year of birth in or about 1841.
Per his death certificate, Sypko Sypkens died on 5 Apr 1907 at 107 South Center Street in Stockton, San Joaquin County, CA. According to B. C. Wallace, the county coroner, Mr. Sypkens died of "Acute Gastritis & Pneumonia." There is no informant listed on the death certificate. Some of the information is correct, some is unknown, and some is not correct. He was a native of Holland, as were his parents before him, he was born in 1841, and he was 66 years old. The names of his parents and the day and month of his birth were not known. He was not a widower and he had not been a resident of California for 40 years. He was not a widower because he and his former wife had divorced by the time he came to California. His former wife died on 10 Dec 1906 in Pella, Marion County, Iowa. He was buried in the Stockton Rural Cemetery on 8 Apr 1907.
There is a "Syko Siepkens" who arrived in New York City from Rotterdam, Netherlands, on 29 Mar 1880. He was then 39 years old and a farmer. He was a native of the Netherlands. There appears to be another entry for the same person with a slightly different name of "Sitka Siepkens." He was listed as being 39 years old and a farmer. He is listed as arriving in New York City of 27 Mar 1880. They both arrived on the same ship, the Maas.
There is a S. Siepkens in the 1880 federal census who could be the same person who arrived in the United States just three months earlier. He was enumerated on 30 Jun 1880 while living as a boarder on Franklin Street in Pella, Marion County, Iowa. He had no occupation. He was 38 years old and a native of "Holland.".
A "Sypko Sypkens" married Aaltje Vanrees on 26 May 1881 in the community of Pella, Marion County, Iowa. Her true last name may have been van Rees. Her maiden name was De Vries. The couple divorced prior to 1900.
Sypko Sypkens is in the 1885 Iowa State Census. He was living with his wife Aaltje Sypkens, three stepchildren, and one child of his own in Otley, Marion County, Iowa. The three stepchildren were "Bastiaan van Rees, Anges van Rees, and Helena van Rees. Bastiaan was 9 years old, giving him a year of birth in or about 1876. Anges was 7 years old, giving her a year of birth in or about 1878. Helena was 4 years old, giving her a year of birth in or about 1881. The one child shared by Sypko and Aaltje was listed as "Reint" A. Sypkens. He was one year old, giving him a year of birth in or about 1884. Sypko was listed as being 43 years old and the operator of a dry goods grocery.
There is a Sypko Sypkens living in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and listed in the city directories for the years 1890, 1891, 1892, and 1894.
Sypko Sypkens is in the 1900 federal census. He was then living in Pella, Lake Prairie Township, Marion County, Iowa, as a boarder in a hotel operated by Thomas Cox. He was 59 years old, having been born in Apr 1841 in the Netherlands. He came to the United States in 1880 and he later became a naturalized citizen. No employment was listed for him. He was divorced from his wife. His family was living in the Lake Prairie Township, Marion County, Iowa. His ex-wife was listed as Allice Sypkens. His children were Andrew (17, born June 1883), Willie J. (11, born Jan 1889), and Edd (8, born Sep 1891). Andrew was Reint A. Sypkens in the 1885 Iowa State Census.
It is not known why Sypko Sypkens came to San Joaquin County, CA. He is not in the 1906, 1907, and 1908 Stockton city directories. Interestingly, there is a Wm Sypkins in the 1908 Stockton city directory. He was a machinist for Lewis and Jensen. He lived at 419 East Channel Street. Sypko and William may have been related, despite the slight variation in the last name.
Per Lois Hessing Hofmeyer, Sypko Sypkens was born in Zuidbroek, Groninger, Netherlands, on 1 Apr 1841. She also gave a link to his birth record. It appears he was born as "Sijpke Sijpkens." His father was listed as "Reint Willems Sijpkens" and his mother as "Gezina ten Kate." The occupation of the father was "landgebruiker.".
