Gezina Ten Cate was born on October 16, 1864 in Graafschap, Allegan County, Michigan. She was the eldest child and daughter of Derk Ten Cate and Berendina Oonk. She had two sisters and two brothers. Gezina was only twelve years old at the time of her mother's untimely passing. By virtue of her being the oldest daughter, she quickly became a caretaker of sorts of her younger siblings- the youngest being only six months old at the time of her mothers death. Gezina's father eventually remarried; but the new stepmother has been described as a "strict and often cruel disciplarian.".
Gezina was eighteen years old when she married John Deur in Holland, Ottawa County, Michigan on May 25, 1883. John was the son of George Deur and Marrigje Visser who were immigrants from Heerde, a town in the Gelderland region of the Netherlands. Gezina and John had nine children- eight boys and one boy. Their names in order of their ages were George, Daniel, Martin, Benjamin, Gerrit, Herman, Hattie Hendrika, Hendrik Eugene, and Theodore Roosevelt Deur. All of the children were born in Holland, Michigan. The year following the birth of their youngest child, they left Holland and moved to a farm in Fremont, Newaygo County, Michigan. The soil was excellent and good crops greatly improved the family economic situation.
Gezina was fondly remembered by her children for her gentleness of spirit, her generosity, and her goodwill to all. She died on November 13, 1942 from advanced cancer of the tongue. She is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Newaygo County, Michigan.

Mrs. John Deur, 78, formerly of Holland, died Friday afternoon after a lingering illness in the home of her son, Dr. Ted Deur of Grant. She was born October 16, 1864 in Graafschap, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Derk Ten Cate. Mrs. Deur was a resident of Holland previously to her moving to Fremont in 1909.
Surviving are her seven sons, and one daughter, Mrs. Bert Kranmer of Route 3, Holland; 33 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry Ten Cate of Holland; a sister, Mrs. Richard Mouw also of Holland.

John Deur was born in Holland, Michigan on May 7, 1861 - the youngest son of George Deur and Marrigje Visser. His parents immigrated to the United States from the Netherlands in October 1847.
He was married to Gezina Ten Cate on May 25, 1883 in Holland, Michigan. He and Gezina had nine children- eight boys and one girl. Their names from eldest to youngest were George, Daniel, Martin, Benjamin, Gerrit, Herman, Hattie Henrietta, Hendrik Eugene, and Theodore Roosevelt Deur. Their first three or four children were born while John and Gezina lived with John's parents on their farm. This was not altogether a happy arrangement. The farm consisted of only forty acres of very poor soil from which they scarcely could eke out a living. After John's mother passed away, John and Gezina and John's brothers moved to other farms in an effort to better their lots. . In 1908 or there about, this farm was sold and John bought an eighty acre farm two miles northwest of Fremont, Michigan, which had a large frame house and adequate farm buildings. The soil was excellent and good crops greatly improved the family economic situation. The John Deur children grew to adulthood in Fremont. The older boys left the parental home to set up homes of their own. Each one was given half of his earnings, an arrangement between father and sons, a horse and buggy on reaching the age of 21 years or marriage, which ever came first. This probably being an inducement to get them to strive for their own.
He died on September 2, 1926 in Fremont, Newaygo County, Michigan from a cerebral hemorrhage. John Deur was known for having a rather volatile temper, his straight forwardness, his ability as a farmer and his extreme devotion to his family and religious beliefs. He and Gezina are buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Newaygo County, Michigan.

Herman Ten Cate was the second born child and the eldest son of Derk Ten Cate and Berendina Oonk. He was born in Laketown Twp, Allegan County, Michigan on August 17, 1866. Herman had an elementary education. He learned to read, to do simple arithmetic problems, and learned to spell. Herman and his brothers helped their father Derk on his farm, and in turn this made them reasonable proficient farmers, who in adulthood went forth on their own.
At the age of twenty-six Herman married Henrikje Kamp. Unfortunately, after only eight months of marriage she died. The following year, Herman married Geertje Sneiders, daughter of Harm Sneiders. She gave birth to six children, three of whom died in infancy. Dena, Allie, and Dora grew into adulthood.
Herman had forty acres in Laketown Township between Saugatuck and Graafschap. On this farm he raised fruits and vegetables which he peddled in Holland and enough grain and hay to sustain three or four cows which through the selling of milk to the creamery gave them a monthly check.
Life was very simple in the Herman Ten Cate household. There were no extravagences of any kind and he never owned an automobile.
Herman preceded his wife in death on January 21, 1940 in east Saugatuck. He and his wife are buried in East Saugatuck Cemetery. Following is his obituary.
The following appeared in the Holland Sentinel on Monday, January 22, 1940.
HERMAN TEN CATE CLAIMED BY DEATH.
Herman Ten Cate, 73, died Sunday afternoon at his home in East Saugatuck following an illness of a few months.
Surviving are the widow; three daughters, Mrs. Gerrit Gruppen of Graafschap, Mrs. John Stadt of East Saugatuck, and Mrs. Herman Kotman of East Saugatuck; two grandchildren; a brother, Henry of East Saugatuck; two sisters, Mrs. Sena Deur of Fremont and Mrs. Richard Mouw of Holland; two step brothers, Sam Doll of South Dakota, and Gerrit Doll of Holland.
Funeral services will be held at 1:15 p.m. from the home and 2 p.m. from the East Saugatuck Church. The Rev. S. P. Meirsma will officiate. Burial will be in East Saugatuck Cemetery.

Johannah is my maternal grandfather's mother.
Johannah Ten Cate was the youngest daughter of Berendina Oonk and Derk Ten Cate. She was born on the family farm one mile south of Graafschap, Michigan, April 12, 1876. Unfortunately, she was never to know her mother, as her mother died from a heart attack, September 24,1876; Johanna being less than six months old. At the time of her mother's death, her sister Sena was twelve years old, so household duties fell upon her older sister. Her father married again a year later, which provided the family of five children with a mother. As far as the children were concerned this did not add to their happiness, as the new mother was a strict and often cruel disciplinarian.
Johanna attended the rural school of which Luke Lugers was the teacher, and on Sunday she went to Graafschap Christian Reformed Church. She remained in school until about the time she had finished the sixth reader, when her folks sold the farm and moved to Grand Rapids. School days were over, and she worked for a while in a bean factory.
The stay in Grand Rapids lasted for only about four years and the family moved to Holland. The Ninth Street Christian Reformed Church with its Sunday services and weekday catechism classes was the center of not only her religious life, but her social life as well. This is where she met her future husband, Bauke VanderPloeg, and it was by the greatly beloved minister of her church, Dominie K. Van Goor, that she was married to the man named Bauke, which name they changed to Bert.
Johannah and Bert were parents to seven children. Two of the children, Effie Henrietta and Nelson Earl died as babies. The other five children, John, Bernice, Evelyn, Donald, and Herbert all married and had wonderful families. The children were all raised to help one another. The Bert and Johannah Vander Ploeg family moved around quite a bit when the kids were young. They lived in Grand Rapids for a while as well as Lake Odessa and Grand Haven. They finally settled back in Holland and after several years of doing factory work. Factory work was never really to Bert's liking, so while working in the factory, he and his wife started a floral shop and greenhouse business known as the Shady Lawn Florists on the five acre plot of ground that he owned. Bert resigned from his factory position and gave full time to the florist business in which the whole family was engaged, including his wife. Johanna died at the age of fifty six and her husband Bert died ten years later at the age of sixty six.

Mrs. Vander Ploeg Dies of Heart Attack in Car at Home.
Mrs Johanna Vander Ploeg, 56, whose enthusiasm for flowers was a factor in the establishment of the Shady Lawn greenhouse here ten years ago, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at 5:15 o'clock at her home, 275 East Sixteenth Street, following a heart attack.
Although complaining last week about her heart, Mrs. Vander Ploeg appeared to be in normal health. She had driven downtown yesterday with Mr. and Mrs. Harold B. Gemmill and had just returned home when she was stricken. She died in the automobile.
Mrs Vander Ploeg spent practically all of her life in Holland and vicinity. She lived for a few years in Grand Rapids and in Grand Haven. She was born in Laketown township, Allegan County April 12, 1876.
For many years she was interested in flowers and was active with her husband, Bert Vander Ploeg in starting the greenhouse here. She was an active member of Sixth Reformed Church.
Surviving are her husband, three sons, John B Vander Ploeg of Holland and Donald and Herbert Vander Ploeg at home: two daughters, Mrs. Dennis Boer of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Mrs. Harold B. Gemmill of Holland: two brothers, Herman Ten Cate and Henry Ten Cate of Graafschap: two sisters, Mrs. Sena Deur of Fremont and Mrs. Richard B Mouw of Holland: and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the home and at 2 o'clock from Sixth Reformed Church, Rev J. Vanderbeek will officiate. Burial will be in Holland township cemetery.

Last Monday Evening without any warning whatever, Mrs. B. Vander Ploeg suddenly passed on into eternity. The congregation deeply feels the hand of God upon us and extends to the bereaved family its sincerest sympathy.

Their first three or four children were born while John and Gezina lived with John's parents on their farm. This was not altogether a happy arrangement. The farm consisted of only forty acres of very poor soil from which they scarcely could eke out a living. After John's mother passed away, John and Gezina and John's brothers moved to other farms in an effort to better their lots. . In 1908 or there about, this farm was sold and John bought an eighty acre farm two miles northwest of Fremont, Michigan, which had a large frame house and adequate farm buildings. The soil was excellent and good crops greatly improved the family economic situation. The John Deur children grew to adulthood in Fremont. The older boys left the parental home to set up homes of their own. Each one was given half of his earnings, an arrangement between father and sons, a horse and buggy on reaching the age of 21 years or marriage, which ever came first. This probably being an inducement to get them to strive for their own.
He died on September 2, 1926 in Fremont, Newaygo County, Michigan from a cerebral hemorrhage. John Deur was known for having a rather volatile temper, his straight forwardness, his ability as a farmer and his extreme devotion to his family and religious beliefs. He and Gezina are buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Newaygo County, Michigan.

Opmerkingen Gezina (Sena) ten Cate.
Gezina Ten Cate was born on October 16, 1864 in Graafschap, Allegan County, Michigan. She was the eldest child and daughter of Derk Ten Cate and Berendina Oonk. She had two sisters and two brothers. Gezina was only twelve years old at the time of her mother's untimely passing. By virtue of her being the oldest daughter, she quickly became a caretaker of sorts of her younger siblings- the youngest being only six months old at the time of her mothers death. Gezina's father eventually remarried; but the new stepmother has been described as a "strict and often cruel disciplarian.".
Gezina was eighteen years old when she married John Deur in Holland, Ottawa County, Michigan on May 25, 1883. John was the son of George Deur and Marrigje Visser who were immigrants from Heerde, a town in the Gelderland region of the Netherlands. Gezina and John had nine children- eight boys and one boy. Their names in order of their ages were George, Daniel, Martin, Benjamin, Gerrit, Herman, Hattie Hendrika, Hendrik Eugene, and Theodore Roosevelt Deur. All of the children were born in Holland, Michigan. The year following the birth of their youngest child, they left Holland and moved to a farm in Fremont, Newaygo County, Michigan. The soil was excellent and good crops greatly improved the family economic situation.
Gezina was fondly remembered by her children for her gentleness of spirit, her generosity, and her goodwill to all. She died on November 13, 1942 from advanced cancer of the tongue. She is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Newaygo County, Michigan.

Mrs. John Deur, 78, formerly of Holland, died Friday afternoon after a lingering illness in the home of her son, Dr. Ted Deur of Grant. She was born October 16, 1864 in Graafschap, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Derk Ten Cate. Mrs. Deur was a resident of Holland previously to her moving to Fremont in 1909.
Surviving are her seven sons, and one daughter, Mrs. Bert Kranmer of Route 3, Holland; 33 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry Ten Cate of Holland; a sister, Mrs. Richard Mouw also of Holland.
