Johannah is my maternal grandfather's mother.
Johannah Ten Cate was the youngest daughter of Berendina Oonk and Derk Ten Cate. She was born on the family farm one mile south of Graafschap, Michigan, April 12, 1876. Unfortunately, she was never to know her mother, as her mother died from a heart attack, September 24,1876; Johanna being less than six months old. At the time of her mother's death, her sister Sena was twelve years old, so household duties fell upon her older sister. Her father married again a year later, which provided the family of five children with a mother. As far as the children were concerned this did not add to their happiness, as the new mother was a strict and often cruel disciplinarian.
Johanna attended the rural school of which Luke Lugers was the teacher, and on Sunday she went to Graafschap Christian Reformed Church. She remained in school until about the time she had finished the sixth reader, when her folks sold the farm and moved to Grand Rapids. School days were over, and she worked for a while in a bean factory.
The stay in Grand Rapids lasted for only about four years and the family moved to Holland. The Ninth Street Christian Reformed Church with its Sunday services and weekday catechism classes was the center of not only her religious life, but her social life as well. This is where she met her future husband, Bauke VanderPloeg, and it was by the greatly beloved minister of her church, Dominie K. Van Goor, that she was married to the man named Bauke, which name they changed to Bert.
Johannah and Bert were parents to seven children. Two of the children, Effie Henrietta and Nelson Earl died as babies. The other five children, John, Bernice, Evelyn, Donald, and Herbert all married and had wonderful families. The children were all raised to help one another. The Bert and Johannah Vander Ploeg family moved around quite a bit when the kids were young. They lived in Grand Rapids for a while as well as Lake Odessa and Grand Haven. They finally settled back in Holland and after several years of doing factory work. Factory work was never really to Bert's liking, so while working in the factory, he and his wife started a floral shop and greenhouse business known as the Shady Lawn Florists on the five acre plot of ground that he owned. Bert resigned from his factory position and gave full time to the florist business in which the whole family was engaged, including his wife. Johanna died at the age of fifty six and her husband Bert died ten years later at the age of sixty six.
The following is Johannah's obituary which ran in the Holland Sentinel.
"Local Resident Taken Suddenly".
Mrs. Vander Ploeg Dies of Heart Attack in Car at Home.
Mrs Johanna Vander Ploeg, 56, whose enthusiasm for flowers was a factor in the establishment of the Shady Lawn greenhouse here ten years ago, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at 5:15 o'clock at her home, 275 East Sixteenth Street, following a heart attack.
Although complaining last week about her heart, Mrs. Vander Ploeg appeared to be in normal health. She had driven downtown yesterday with Mr. and Mrs. Harold B. Gemmill and had just returned home when she was stricken. She died in the automobile.
Mrs Vander Ploeg spent practically all of her life in Holland and vicinity. She lived for a few years in Grand Rapids and in Grand Haven. She was born in Laketown township, Allegan County April 12, 1876.
For many years she was interested in flowers and was active with her husband, Bert Vander Ploeg in starting the greenhouse here. She was an active member of Sixth Reformed Church.
Surviving are her husband, three sons, John B Vander Ploeg of Holland and Donald and Herbert Vander Ploeg at home: two daughters, Mrs. Dennis Boer of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Mrs. Harold B. Gemmill of Holland: two brothers, Herman Ten Cate and Henry Ten Cate of Graafschap: two sisters, Mrs. Sena Deur of Fremont and Mrs. Richard B Mouw of Holland: and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the home and at 2 o'clock from Sixth Reformed Church, Rev J. Vanderbeek will officiate. Burial will be in Holland township cemetery.
Taken from the Holland Sentinel.
(Note Holland township cemetery is now known as Pilgrim Home Cemetery, Holland, Ottawa County, Michigan).
The following appeared in the Sixth Reformed Church Bulletin on November 6, 1932.
Last Monday Evening without any warning whatever, Mrs. B. Vander Ploeg suddenly passed on into eternity. The congregation deeply feels the hand of God upon us and extends to the bereaved family its sincerest sympathy.

Opmerkingen Geneva Marie Cook.
Geneva Marie Cook was born in Holland, Michigan on April 27, 1918. She was the only daughter and the eldest child of Peter Klaas Cook and Adrianna Breen. One of her favorite games as a child was Jacks.
She attended the Christian School on Central avenue. Sometimes, in the spring, she would put on her roller skates at home in the morning and skate to school. Then, when it was time to go home at noon, she would sit on the steps at school, put on her skates and go home for lunch and skate back to the school by one o'clock.
She attended church services regularly at Prospect Park Christian Reformed Church with her family. Her father was on the consistory and her parents were both members of the choir. Geneva attended bible study and catechism.
She met my grandfather at a Valentines day party and.
Geneva and Herb were married in Prospect Park Christian Reformed Church on October 11, 1937- the same day as Herbert's 24th birthday. It was the beginning of a beautiful 62 year marriage.
Geneva and Herb had six children, Marcia, Herb, Amber, Philip, Joan and daughter Rose Ann who was stillborn.
Grandpa was a school teacher and principal during the majority of his working career. Grandma gave her children a good home with lots of love and a keen sense of right and wrong.
Grandma loved her family. She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren. As her grandchild I remember visiting my grandparents and reading the bible after dinner. Every meal began with a prayer asking the Lord to bless our food and the meal ended with a prayer of thanksgiving. During these prayers Grandpa and Grandma prayed for their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Grandma loved to look nice. Her hobbies were jewelry and shopping. She had so much jewelry! Every time we visited she was wearing something sparkly and pretty. Grandma had a LOT of style.
Visiting my grandparents was always a fun occasion. Being that my dad was in the military, we would usually only be able to see them once or twice a year, but those times were so special. When we saw them, it was usually in the summer and we visited them at their summer cottage on Lake Michigan. Grandpa would have the badminton net up and was always up for a game. Grandma didn't play very much, mostly because of an accident she had several years ago that left her with knee trouble, but she always enjoyed watching. Many times she would make lemonade for us to enjoy after we had worked up a sweat.
In later years, they would visit my parents home in Texas and stay for about a month. It was always a fun time and it would usually be around Christmas. This was always a great time to get away from the harsh winters of Michigan and enjoy the benefits of the sunbelt! A good time was had by all.
My grandparents were able to enjoy their two homes until about 1999, when my grandfather got sick. Unfortunately, we lost him on July 1, 2000. Shortly after his death, Grandma sold their house in town and kept the cottage on the lake. It was the site of three family reunions of which the last one was in July, 2007. Grandma had such a wonderful time at these reunions. At our last one, no one had any idea that Grandma was ill with cancer. She was in her element having her family around her. She was especially thrilled that her brothers were able to make the reunion. It was only 6 weeks later in mid-September that she took her last breath, leaving all of us shocked and very devastated.
Losing Grandma was like the ending of an era. My whole life, I always looked forward to seeing my grandparents and now it is hard to accept that I can't just see them anymore. They were all remarkable people and the world is a better place for having all of them on this earth.

Opmerkingen Herbert Lee van der Ploeg.
Herbert Lee Vander Ploeg was born October 11, 1913 in Holland, Ottawa County, Michigan. He was the youngest child of Bert Vander Ploeg and Johannah Ten Cate. He attended the local public schools in Holland, Michigan and attended Sixth Reformed Church with his family. Herbert had a happy childhood. His parents instilled in him morals and the importance of hard work. His parents were the founders and proprieters of the Shady Lawn Florists. Herb and his siblings all worked at the flower shop in some capacity. One tragic event that the Vander Ploeg family had to endure was the loss of Johannah, their mother. She was only 56 when she was stricken unexpectedly with a heart attack. As hard as that was, Herbert pushed forward. He eventually graduated from Hope College and attended Calvin College, West Michigan University, Michigan State University and The University of Michigan.
Herb met Geneva Marie Cook at a Valentine's Party during his college days and they were married by Reverend Lambertus VanLaar on October 11, (also Herbert's Birthday) 1937. They were blessed by the birth of six children: Marcia, Herbert, Jr, Rose Ann, Amber, Philip and JoAn, of which Rose Ann was stillborn.
Until 1941, Herbert worked in the family greenhouse business. From 1941 to 1948 he was employed as a chemist and chief metallurgist for the Bohn Aluminum and Brass Corporation, Holland, Michigan. When the factory closed, he changed his profession and became teaching principal at Lakewood School and later at Waukazoo school as well. He was in the teaching and administrative profession until his retirement in 1979. My grandfather was always an entrepreneur. In addition to his teaching job, he would also have another little business venture going at the same time. For a long time, he sold tombstones out of the front porch of his house which was in close proximity to Pilgrim Home Cemetery. He also prepared income tax returns every year from that same enclosed front porch.
Grandpa dabbled in art. He painted several pictures. His mother thought he was going to be an artist. He also enjoyed music. He played around on the violin, mandolin, guitar, harmonica, and piano. All of his children learned to play an instrument and most of his grandchildren learned how to play instruments and have an appreciation for music.
The children of Herbert and Geneva Vander Ploeg all married and had children of their own. As of the date of this writing, Herbert and Geneva were blessed with eighteen grandchildren (one died as an infant) and 15 great grandchildren.
As a grandchild of Herbert Vander Ploeg, I have many fond memories of visiting my grandparents. When I was little and just learning to be a big bad kindergartener, I remember telling my Grandpa that I learned my ABC's. He told me "I bet that I could say my ABC's backwards faster than you can say them FORWARD." I didn't believe him and I lost the challenge. I remember being so impressed. The next year, when we visited Michigan I had to show him that I could say my alphabet backwards too. (I still can!).
My grandparents always lived on the corner of 16th street and Lincoln Ave in the big two story cement house. In my heart, that will always be their home regardless of who owns it. They lived there most of the time, but grandpa and grandma also had a cottage on Edgewood Beach. We would visit them there in the summer months. Grandpa would always have up the badminton net and we would often get a game going. Grandpa would play too. He liked to have fun. Many years around the fourth of July my grandparents would have a reunion at the cottage. Not only would the kids come, his brothers and sisters, and cousins would come. There were many times where there were easily more than 50 people there. ( and only one bathroom!!) It was great times and I now wish that I would have listened closer to the old family stories! Grandpa always loved a good "wing ding!".
Another fond memory I have is getting up on Sunday morning to go to church. Grandpa would wake up singing at the top of his lungs sometimes he would even put on a record. We would all have a little breakfast and get dressed. To borrow a line from my younger brother, it was like going to church with the Royal family. Grandma and Grandpa would be dressed "to the nines". I remember being a kid and being scooted to the front of the church to hear the childrens sermon when it was time.. During the "grown-up" sermon, grandma always kept us kids quiet by passing out mints and candy!.
One of my last memories of Grandpa is that he made the trip from Michigan to Texas to attend my wedding. Being that my dad was in the military and moved around a lot while I was growing up, my grandparents weren't always able to come to special events like graduations and such. I was so elated when I heard that he and Grandma were coming. My wedding day is one of the happiest days of my life and it just meant that much more to me that Grandpa was there to share in it with me.
We lost Grandpa at the age of 86 on July 1, 2000. Since that time, I have visited Michigan several times. The house on Lincoln has been sold since then..I have visited the cottage and no longer see that badminton net. It is a different world than when he was alive. Grandpa, we love you and think of you often. Godspeed, until we meet again! Love ya,.
