geb. te Ferwert [fr] op 4 jun 1848,

Opmerkingen Jan Sieds van der Ploeg.
Jan Sieds van der Ploeg was born June 4, 1848 in Ferwerd, Friesland, Netherlands to Sieds Hilbrands van der Ploeg and Reingjen Hendrika Schokker. He was the youngest of six children born to this couple. Little is known about his life as a youngster.
On May 24, 1874, in Ferwerd Jan Sieds van der Ploeg married Yfke Baukes Helder, daughter of Bauke Pieters Helder and Tetje Wopkes Ferwerda. They had their first child, Seids the following year. They had 8 children total, 2 of which died as infants. There children were:.
Sieds Vander Ploeg who married Mary Mouw.
Bauke (Bert) Vander Ploeg who married Johannah Ten Cate.
Hilbrant (Harry) Vander Ploeg who married Jennie Riemersma.
Tietje Vander Ploeg who died in infancy.
Andrew Vander Ploeg who married Anna Pathuis, Anna Berghorst, and Jennie Zoerhof.
Tillie Vander Ploeg who died in infancy.
Reka Vander Ploeg who died at the age of 20.
Tillie Vander Ploeg who married Wilbert Van Appledorn.
Of the children, the first four were born in the Netherlands. The Vander Ploegs immigrated to the Holland, Michigan area in May 1881. The first of their remaining children was born the following year.
After arriving in America, the Jan Sieds and Ifke Helder Vander Ploeg family lived on a farm on East Sixteenth Street, Holland Michigan, beyond the Pilgrim Home Cemetery and the Holland-Allegan train tracks. That farm is now occupied by the General Electric Company. The boys attended Van Raalte country school located on the corner of what is now Sixteenth Street (Adams Road) and Country Club Road. They were taught by School Master Joe Visscher to a fifth grade education. The family attended what is now known as the Ninth Street Christian Reformed Church, where dutch sermons were preached and dutch psalms were sung. Jan Seids and Ifke moved from the Sixteenth Street farm to 172 Fairbanks Ave, Holland, Michigan. The 16th Street farm land was made of heavy clay soil and not the kind that Jan Sieds was familiar with. Frisians as farmers are accustomed to working in lowlands, and for this reason, in coming to America, many of them settled on the lowlands of Michigan, such as are found in the Holland , Zeeland, Kalamazoo, and Muskegon areas. On these lowlands they raised celery, peppermint, onions, and carrots.
Jan Sieds after moving to Fairbanks avenue bought a piece of lowland, probably five or ten acres, on East Eighth Street, a site which is now occupied by the De Nooyer Garage. On this plot of ground he raised garden vegetables to meet the needs of his family, which had grown larger: Andrew, Reka, and Tillie were added since coming to America. Gardening was only part time work, and did not give him money to buy the needs of a family. Jan Sieds found with the city of Holland, working under the supervision of Abe Nauta, City Superintendent, cutting down trees, grading street and keeping the same clean and orderly.
After their fifth grade education, the boys sought work in the factories in the city of Holland. They were hard workers, finally becoming expert cabinet makers in the Holland furniture factories, namely the Ottawa Furniture, the Holland Furniture, and West Michigan Furniture factories. Harry and Andrew branched out and became carpenters, building houses along Fairbanks Avenue. Bert became a cabinet room foreman in the West Michigan Furniture factory in Holland, and later a superintendent of the Wolverine Furniture Company in Zeeland.
This family is illustrative of the other families who settled in Western Michigan. They were successful because they were honest, serious, hardworking men and women.
Jan Sieds Vander Ploeg died in Zeeland, Michigan on March 12, 1926 at the home of his son Harry. He is buried in the Pilgrim Home Cemetery in Holland.
The following ran in the Holland Sentinel on Saturday, March 13, 1926:.
FORMER CITY EMPLOYEE DIES AT AGE OF 78.
John S. Vander Ploeg Came to This Country Half Century Ago.
Last evening at the age of nearly 78 years, Mr. John S. Vander Ploeg died at the home of his son, Mr. Harry Vander Ploeg, in Zeeland, after an illness of three weeks. Until within the last year, Mr. Vander Ploeg has been a resident of Holland. And for many years he has been an employee of the city. Three years ago, he found work with the city too strenuous, so he found work with his son, Mr. Bert Vander Ploeg, who manages the greenhouses of the Shady Lawn Florists.
Mr. Vander Ploeg was born in the Netherlands and as a young married man he left the land of his birth and sailed for America. On reaching this country he immediately made his home with the settlers in and around Holland. This was fifty years ago.
The funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon, March 16, at one o'clock at the home of Mr. Harry Vander Ploeg, who resides at the corner of Lincoln and State Sts, at Zeeland, where Rev. D. R. Drucker will officiate. At two o'clock a service will be held in the chapel of the Central Avenue Christian Reformed Church, Holland, at which time Rev. L. Veltkamp will have charge. At this time his friends in Holland will be given the opportunity to view the remains.
Mr. Vander Ploeg is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Van Appledorn, and four sons, Sieds, Bert, and Andrew of Holland, and Harry of Zeeland.

Obituary:.
Betty Jane (Ten Cate) Kruisselbrink..was born February 3, 1933 in Moose Lake, Minnesota to William and Mildred (Young) Soderman. When Betty was two years old, her mother became ill and was hospitalized for several months, it was at this time that Betty was placed into foster care. In 1936, Betty was legally adopted by John and Martha (Tinklenberg) Ten Cate.
As a young girl, Betty attended country school and then the Edgerton Christian Elemetary School graduating from the 8th grade. In June 1949, when Betty was 16 years old, she was involved in an automoblie accident which took the sight of her left eye. She endured many surgeries and several months of recovery but Betty's faith and courage in this time of trial stayed strong and in 1951 she made profession of her faith in Jesus Christ at the First Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton.
On July 18, 1951, Betty was united in marriage to Jacob Kruisselbrink at the American Reformed Church in Woodstock, Minnesota. After their marriage Betty and Jake lived in an upstairs apartment on Betty's parent's farm. Later they moved to a home in Edgerton and eventually to a home in Woodstock. In 1957 the family moved to Artesia, California where Betty enjoyed being a devoted mother and housewife. She was an accomplished seamstress making all of her children's clothing. It was in California where Betty began raising registered dogs. The family returned to Minnesota in December of 1963 when they purchased the family farm from Betty's parents. The couple made their home here for 44 years. In June 2007 Betty moved from her home on the farm to Ashton Care Center in Pipestone, Minnesota and on March 3, 2008 to Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton.
Family was the focal point of Betty's life, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren meant the world to her and she always enjoyed spending time with them. Betty's compassion and love for others always shone through in her life. She was a friend to all and you could always count on her being there for you if you needed her. She never turned anyone away.
Betty had a passion for animals. She raised registered puppies for over 40 years. She also raised registered cats, exotic birds and fish for resale in pet stores and to private families. Betty loved gardening and always planted a huge vegetable garden as well as many flower beds around the farm. Betty could play several musical instruments, never taking any music lessons, she learned to play everything by ear. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed making meals for her family. In her later years, after losing most of her eyesight, music became a great comfort to her. She loved singing along with her music CD's. Betty was a member of the First Reformed Church in Edgerton.
On November 9, 2010 Betty was admitted to Pipestone County Medical Center and after three years of struggling with several health issues Betty went to be with her Savior on November 10, 2010 at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 7 days. She was surrounded by her family whom loved her dearly.
